It runs from State Route 420 (Seminary Road) north to Shirlington Circle, an interchange with Interstate 395. Quaker Lane continues south, unnumbered, to State Route 236 (Duke Street).
SR 402 intersects State Route 7 (King Street) together with Braddock Road in an at-grade intersection, and fronts the Virginia Theological Seminary and the historic neighborhoods of Fairlington and Parkfairfax.
